Free Walk

« Back to Glossary Index

The free walk is the most relaxed and natural form of the walk

It allows the horse complete freedom to stretch the neck forward and downward while maintaining a clear, regular four-beat rhythm. The horse walks forward actively, swinging through the back and stepping clearly into or beyond the hoofprints of the forefeet. The reins are given to allow full stretch, yet light, elastic contact must be maintained. The rider follows the motion with a supple seat, supporting rhythm and direction without restricting the horse.

The free walk is not only a test of looseness and trust but also a measure of correct training. It shows the horse’s confidence in the hand and its ability to stay balanced and marching even when the frame lengthens.
