Extended Walk

« Back to Glossary Index

The extended walk demonstrates the greatest lengthening of the horse’s frame and stride while preserving a clear, regular four-beat rhythm.

The horse walks forward energetically and purposefully, with complete relaxation and visible swing through the back. It reaches as far forward and downward as possible with the neck, stretching from the withers while remaining connected and light in the contact. The hind feet should clearly overtrack the hoofprints of the forefeet, showing the full use of the body and joints. Although the steps are longer, the rhythm must stay steady and the tempo unhurried. The horse remains attentive to the rider’s aids, maintaining straightness and balance even in the greatest extension.

The extended walk represents the opposite end of the collection scale from the collected walk. It reflects trust, looseness, and correct throughness—qualities that confirm the effectiveness of training and the horse’s willingness to move freely within the rider’s connection.
